  1. Sark's first question is about balancing TXHS recruiting vs. national balance. Points out 19 of the 23 draft picks in the last two years have come from within the state of Texas.
  2. Sarkisian says this week at THSCA is always like the kickoff of the football season.
  3. Fritz calls Houston the "epicenter" of high school football.
  4. Houston HC Willie Fritz says there is no doubt about having the conversation with kids about NIL. Says it feels like everything has been sped up in comparison to previous years. "Money is talked about."
  5. One point of emphasis from Orphey I am a big fan of is how often he throws footballs to his DBs. Orphey said earlier in the lecture that he doesn’t believe cornerbacks catch enough footballs during practice. Added along the lines of, how do you expect interceptions when you don’t practice catching? On all footwork and agility drills, there is a ball thrown to his cornerbacks.
  6. A couple of practice clips shown as examples of techniques by Texas cornerbacks. Kobe Black made a great play, and received praise for his violence at the point of attack, on a stop route from Aaron Butler for a PBU. Kade Phillips, Jaylon Guilbeau, Manny Muhammad and Warren Roberson have all been used as examples as well.
  7. Heavy emphasis on running WR blockers on the outside vertical back to the LOS from the cornerback position. A long technical talk on engaging on blocks. Says violence is the key on the outside and it is worked everyday at practice.
  8. Footwork and pedaling accounts for Agilities — “speed doesn’t help you at corner, technique helps you at corner,” says Orphey.
  9. Orphey says he is huge on having his guys take notes during film. Says everything is detailed, from the date on the top of the page to specifics about coverages, schemes, personnel.
  10. There was a lengthy comment about coverage sacks being a stat for his DBs. Keeping track of guys doing their job even when the box score doesn’t show up.
  11. Orphey says physicality is a must for the Texas cornerbacks. Says the key for his practice is getting physical from the jump. Very early into practice there is some sort of hitting or tackling for his DBs.
  12. Orphey on Duane Akina: “I love his juice, I love his energy.” Orphey on playing for Akina: “One thing you cannot be is a soft ass.”
  13. Jeff Howe and I are in San Antonio for the 2025 Texas High School Coaches Association convention, otherwise known as Coaching School. Steve Sarkisian will speak with media at 2:00 cst. RB coach Chad Scott spoke earlier this am to HS coaches. And CB coach Mark Orphey is speaking currently.
  14. Elko on the Lonestar Showdown: "I think it's great that game is back. With the way those two programs are operating right now, that game is going to matter at the end of the year... We certainly look forward to the challenge."
  15. Texas A&M CB Will Lee was asked which opposing field he is most looking forward to playing at: "I can't wait to play at Texas. Me being at K-State, losing there in overtime and just getting back there and just beating them at their home was going to be the best thing to me. That's real exciting for me."
  16. I asked DJ Lagway in passing this afternoon what his thoughts were on Jermaine Bishop Jr. “He’s a guy! Stud.”
  17. Listened to the majority of the John Mateer media session. "Precision and toughness" is how he described his game. He mentioned you have to precise with the speed of the game and the level of chaos that comes with playing in the SEC. And obviously, have to be tough to withstand the length of the season. Mateer said he is trying to get the hang of sliding or going out of bounds without taking the extra hit. Says it has never been a part of his game. Last year at Wazzu he paid it no attention in the early part of the season, though as he continued to take hit after hit it crawled to the forefront of his game each week.
  18. Q. We all talk about rivalries. What's the one you guys have with Texas, how does that feel? ROBERT SPEARS-JENNINGS: That's rivalry is probably the biggest rivalry in college football, I feel like, because it's the only rivalry that you're at a neutral site every year same weekend. One team will have at the 50-yard line burnt orange and the other one is crimson red, I feel that's probably the hardest thing.
  19. Venables on losing two of the last three Red River Shootouts: “We’ll get back on track and we look forward to the opportunity. Two years ago was reflective of the type of game that it should be and will be moving forward."
  20. Brent Venables: "This is a team I love to be in the building with every day and I believe they have the ability it takes to claw back to where I believe Oklahoma belongs."
  21. Venables: "We've had a lot of changes since January... Between portal, recruiting, new coaches, new offense, new GM structure. But we've also had tremendous retention."
