Texas softball last night

My wife and I watched the softball game last night. It was the SEC semifinal against a Georgia team that defeated an OU team the night before.

Texas went up 3-0 in the third with two homers. Georgia then tagged Texas for four runs in the fourth. Georgia batted around in the 4th and went 7-9 in plate appearances.

An amazing throw at the plate early in the inning is probably the only thing that kept the floodgates from opening on Texas.

At any rate, Texas battled back to tie it in the bottom half of the inning.

Texas eventually walked it off in the 7th with a two-out single.

The reason I’m writing this is two-fold:

1. This team doesn’t seem to be as “outstanding” as last year’s. Not exactly sure why, but some of it has to do with pitching. Kavan just hasn’t been as dominant as a year ago.

2. The grit the women showed yesterday was legit IMO. It’s hard to go up 3-0, then lose the lead, then battle back to tie it and then win it with a walk off. I don’t know how far this team will go, but the focus they showed through some real adversity last night was encouraging.

They play Alabama for the SEC title this evening on ESPN.

The pitching has developed under pitching coach Patty Ruth Taylor.

Jaycie Nichols Is filling Mia Scott’s shoes at 3rd base very well.  Leighann Goode and Hannah Wells continue to come through with big hits in the clutch.  This team could be getting hot at the right time to make another deep run to OKC.  We’ll see if they have what it takes to go back to back.

Kavan just had a bad inning. She's been strong all year. Batting in women's softball has really improved in 25 years. It used to he just pitching. No more.

Pitching worries me the most about this team.  Kavan hasn’t been as good as last year.

Thought she had a streak last year late season. Was incredible in college world series. Not sure who we go with today . Kavan has to be tired.

Texas didn’t win on one play ...but the Maloney-to-Atwood out in the 5th inning absolutely saved the game. Georgia had Marisa Miller charging home, and Maloney fired a perfect throw that Atwood slapped the tag on.

If Miller scores there, Georgia goes up by two and the whole momentum flips. Instead, that out kept it a one‑run game and gave Texas the chance to tie it in the 6th and walk it off in the 7th.

Not the winning play - but definitely the play that kept winning on the table. To me, that was the most exciting and important play of the game.

It's a different team this year; more weight on Kavan's shoulders because the pitching depth isn't as good as a year ago - Mac Morgan, while not elite, was good enough as a #2.  On offense, they lose some of the power with the loss of Jolie Mitchell and Mia Scott; Jaycie Nichols is a speedster who is more the wreck havoc on the bases type.  LF is where they are really looking for something; last year it was Katie Stewart in left field, so this year you gain some on defense with more speed there, but you lose out on offense because you're not getting the same offensive output from that position.

This team has the potential to win it all or lose in the super regionals, but looks like they are starting to get in sync for the post season, so hoping for a deep run again.
