As of today, Texas baseball is waiting on a decision from infielder Ethan Mendoza. Mendoza went undrafted and could return to Texas for next season (or even the next two seasons with the five-for-five).

I’m told Mendoza at one point was dead set on moving on to the minors, but his injury and upcoming surgery, on top of not being drafted have him re-thinking that decision.

His choices are pretty clear:

Sign an undrafted free agent deal for a max bonus of $150k or return to Texas and try to improve his draft stock.

A decision is expected as soon as tomorrow.

While I have to stop short of guaranteeing anything, there could be some very interesting news this week. I need to leave the topic out of it for now.

Would Texas give Mendoza a full NIL paycheck knowing he is probably only going to be available 1/2 of the season with the upcoming surgery? Is the NIL prorated?

No MLB team will sign an undrafted free agent who requires immediate, major offseason surgery, who cannot participate in mandatory post-draft physicals or upcoming instructional leagues.
