How is he an a-hole if the prior coaching staff and administration agreed to not let anyone wear his jersey number?  If they agreed, what is the issue?

Agree! I saw this too. To be fair I think they should also be giving 9 out to guys that it’s promised to.

Suing your alma mater because another player is using your unretired number results in your reply of “ what’s wrong with that?”
Texas sites used to give me hope because logic and practically led the way. We’re not much different than atm now and days. Money centric with get yours while you can mentality. Sad.

I’ve never been a fan of retiring jersey numbers.  Just put that player’s name and jersey number(s) in a ring of honor instead.  Eventually you run out of jersey numbers if you start retiring too many of them.
