Because they are rich, white punks. Dudes like that, with no previous criminal record, rarely due time.  I am an interpreter for the federal court and experience this daily. I know what I am talking about as I am also a former federal investigator for the DOJ. Hardly a coward too.

Hopefully they get to pledge in federal prison. They’ll be very popular recruits I’m sure.

There is a book called “Among the Bros” about a nationwide fraternity drug dealing ring that sounds exactly what happened here with pledges.  It is about the College of Charleston but UT is kinda mentioned in the book with a mythical SAE who was a fake driver’s license making guru.

I think this kind of stuff happens more often than people think.  A bunch of greeks from UT got in trouble a few years ago for drugs in Cabo if I recall, but wasn’t using pledges.

As a pledge in 1976, the only illegal activity we were asked to do was steal street signs and other things from Aggy Campus to decorate the bonfire.

I felt really bad about this, but the head active in my car asked us to sneak into a corps dorm and see what we could get. I came back with a pair of the riding boots the seniors wear that I found sitting in the hall for one of their freshmen to polish. I also came back with a notebook filled with class notes. I'm grateful that my frat anonymously shipped the boots and class notes back to the corps headquarters at Aggy.

What seems like fun at the time can later wear on your conscience because you know it's wrong, and you have empathy for the senior corps guy who paid a lot for the boots and for the student who wrote the class notes. I found out I was not called to be a thief.
