So Bailey went for the Bag with Tech?

I had a strong feeling he wasn't coming to Austin. Just a guess... after being on a bad team he's looking to be a star in the Big XII and rack up stats hoping to go higher in the draft. Kinda selfish, as is taking the bigger NIL payout.

I played on a bad team in high school and wasn't college football material. If I had been bigger and faster I would have done anything to play for a winning college football program.

Oh well... I've always said if a recruit doesn't really want to play for Texas then I don't want him.

I read that he wanted to be on the field all the time.  At Texas, he would have been in some kind of rotation.  I still think his exposure would have been better at Texas and in the SEC.  We'll see if he was being shortsighted.

With Tech’s offense only returning 5 starters, he might be on the field all the time.

Not just about the bag. At Tech, he is a superstar and will be on the field all the time. At Texas, he might not have even started, let alone been on the field all the time. Though Tech does seem to be throwing money at anything with substance in the portal. McGuire better figure it out this year, because he really has no excuses.

$2.2 million (if true) is a stupid amount of money but let tech pay it. I don’t know how far apart Texas and tech were on NIL here, but you can argue that the real life changing wealth comes from getting drafted in the higher rounds. Texas is proving its ability to get players drafted in those rounds. I don’t know how much development or exposure tech can provide here.

He has a degree from Stanford so he set for life after football. He is getting 2 million dollars to live in Lubbock for for 6-7 months.Thats a easy decision.

To you perhaps. There’s a lot more money on the line than the incremental amount Tech is paying this year. And Stanford + Texas is much better for post football than Stanford + Tech.

Tyree Wilson is the only guy I can think of off the top of my head.  Didn’t know this but apparently Joey McGuire is a defensive minded head coach.  So that makes Tech’s lack of defensive improvement over the last few years even more head scratching.

Might be easier to get stats at Texas when you aren’t double teamed every play.   Tech impressive haul through transfer portal.   I’m gonna lay some money on them to make playoff.

He took the money and he’ll put up stats in a weaker league. 

Winning and being on the big stage is what he missed. 
 

You never know what May open in the next portal either.

Also, Tech is good at overpaying for a few players but not a complete roster. That’s not how win. They had a good portal for them because of cash but it will only take you so far. Arizona St has a better coach.

Most people -- you, me, anyone -- would take that bag and not look back. If he has a Stanford degree and the smarts to go with it, he'll be fine.

Back before the NCAA realized how bad it made them look, it released the average SAT scores for each school's signees in football and basketball. Stanford was at the top of the list, ahead of all the schools with academic reputations.

Texas Tech is a fine school. Beautiful town . Largest college campus in Texas . I’m a Texas fan . All my money went & goes to Texas . Longhorn fan till my last breath . But Texas Tech is a fine conservative minded school. Offer great educational opportunities.

Bailey’s final three were Texas, UCLA and Tech. That doesn’t look like a list where winning a championship is the top priority.

BTW, I hold nothing against a guy looking to get paid out of the portal. If that’s what some guys are looking for, there are plenty of schools that can and will make it happen.

I don’t want this to sound like sour grapes or say Bailey wasn’t a culture fit. It just could’ve been a deal where Texas didn’t check enough boxes for him, for whatever reason.

This is always the dumbest argument. NIL is number 1 or 2 for 98.9% of all players currently. 
 

Hypothetically if we were offering $500k and he chose to go make $1.2 million I would not blame a single person for taking that money.

NIL - we are strong at EDGE so to us Bailey was a luxury.  At some price point we'd love to have him, but would you pay Colin Simmons dollars?  More?  Nope.  And if we did pay him more than even Simmons how do you think that would go over in the locker room?

  Not familiar with Tech's roster but they needed him a lot more than us so it makes sense they would pay more (likely a lot more) than we would. 

As to the argument about exposure for the draft - if you can really play the NFL will find you.  In the 2023 draft Texas Tech DE Tyree Wilson went # 7 overall (one spot higher than Bijan Robinson, first Longhorn off the board).  This year I see mock drafts with players from Marshall, East Carolina and even North Dakota State ranked high.  If I was a Tech recruiter my pitch to Bailey would be "you're the next Tyree Wilson - heck, you're even better.  And he went higher in the draft than any Longhorn that year".

It's really not a big deal guys.
