Only in Louisiana could a governor stroll into a press conference and drop a live grenade on his state’s flagship football program. Jeff Landry didn’t just criticize Brian Kelly’s contract — he called it “terrible.” Then he went for the encore: announcing that AD Scott Woodward won’t be hiring the next coach, and for good measure tossing in that he’d rather have Donald Trump running the search than Woodward.

That’s not just throwing someone under the bus; that’s backing over them twice and revving the engine.

Forget the X’s and O’s for a second. The bigger question here is how in the world Woodward keeps his job after being humiliated by the governor on live mic. Athletic directors are supposed to be power brokers, not political punching bags. When the governor of your state says out loud he doesn’t trust you to pick a coach, your credibility just went up in smoke faster than a Mike the Tiger pregame fireworks show.

So now LSU has a coach with a “terrible” contract, an AD who’s been neutered by the governor, and a political sideshow that makes the SEC Network look tame. Baton Rouge doesn’t need a coaching search right now — it needs a fire extinguisher.

the reality is that when a coach is fired, everyone associated looks like an imbecile for not predicting that such coach would work out.

There’s no full time President and the AD is a ticking time bomb. My guess is he pumps the brakes until the new President can pick his AD.

Watching schools like LSU should make you grateful for the run we have had under Eltief

The BOD by Abbot has produced exactly zero Regent idiots like we had under Perry.  Eltief runs this board like a world class chairman and representative of UT.

Watching the circus at LSU really does make you appreciate the stretch we’ve had with Eltife. The Abbott-appointed board hasn’t churned out a single Perry-era Regent clown show, and that’s no small thing. Eltife’s handled this like a pro — world-class chairman, steady rep for UT, and the kind of leadership that keeps us out of the tabloid mess other schools are living in.

Personally, I wouldn't. They'll find a good coach who will. I do think this will keep Kiffin away from LSU though. Ole Miss will either pay up (and Kiffin recruits against a down LSU in Louisiana) or he goes to Florida with less drama (and equally amazing recruiting grounds).

I get the dark humor, but in Woodward's defense, the contract he gave out was the standard head coach deal.  In truth everyone in Cajun country, from Monroe to Morgan City was giddy.

The real issue here is reality.  In this year's hiring rampage of 10 or so "big time coaches", only 1 will be brilliant..........the others will be fiscally irresponsible.

My take would be to avoid the obvious. And outside of Kiffin, who’s the obvious? Go for the rising coordinator or G5 guy and roll the dice.

God I can’t believe I watched that. They all sound the same. When he was asked to step in(fed govt) he kicked it back to the NCAA. Okay so what was the point of going on the show then?
