Why do you think Sark made a change at DC? Maybe Sark gave a specific answer and I just missed it

If it was just frustration and just a feeling that he could do better than the bend be and not break defense of Coach K, after watching the replays of last season, especially the last quarter of the Vanderbilt game, I can see why. However, there is an argument his inconsistent offense was a lot of the problem with these right games and the 3 losses. Why do you think he ignored that side of the ball except for the turnover of personnel?

In short, it was defense by committee and Sark had to stay involved.

With Boom, he can just delegate defense  to him as dpty HC, and Sark can focus on adjustments between possessions on offense.

So I think the proof is in the pudding if 1) defense still holds opponents to 20 pts while 2) we are more efficient on offense

They've discussed this on several shows.  Sark had to be too involved with the defense at times last year.  PK doesn't coach secondary so there was a lot of disjointed defense when it came to the front and backside.  Sark wants to be more aggressive and play more bump and run man coverage.  PK can do it, but he doesn't specialize in it and Sark wants someone that is aggressive by nature.  Pk also didn't really recruit, you can see the difference already this year with having a DC that is engaged with the recruits and has the skins on the wall that Muschamp has.

Muschamp was also choice #1 when sark first got here, but Muschamp wasn't ready to leave because he had kids graduating and going to college.  That's why he took a couple of years  at Georgia as a consultant and not a coach, so he could have the freedom to go to Vandy and support his son playing.

In addition to the other issues mentioned, I personally like Muschamp's attacking style over PK's bend don't break (which admittedly was probably best bend don't break defense I've ever seen in Austin). I loved all of the goal line stands in the PK era. But I would have preferred more 3 and outs!

I hope so; I don't believe our Defense was lacking in turnovers however..(We led the SEC in defensive turnovers)

All I am bringing up is the fact Defense was not the reason the ultimate season goal fell short for at least the last 2 seasons. It was offense.

I get the sunshine pump and the nostalgia, and even the mentality change that WM will bring, but I dont understand how majority of folks are more confident in him to produce a better defense when statistically and even visually Texas's defense for the past 2-3 seasons was the best its been in 10+ years!

To those who say "well the offense will be better because Sark wont be involved or as involved in the defense." That's fine and well it should because we got better players around Arch, but if OH St puts up 35 on us, does he get involved with the Defense then?

I see ya what you are saying, but time will tell.

Yeah, I’ve wondered and speculated with friends who are somewhat closely or semi-connected to the team if that was a watershed moment for PK.    Nobody confirmed it with me, but nobody disagreed either.    I honestly didn’t think Sark would pull the trigger and make a change, but I certainly gained a little more respect for him when he did.

Issues with the defense were scheme related, so a coaching change was needed.

Issues with the offense were mostly talent related, so more talent was needed.

Bingo!  Texas is one of the few programs that has the athletes to successfully run Muschamp's scheme.  Not saying it will be that good, but the offense should more closely resemble 2019 LSU or 2020 Alabama because of the upgrades at the skill positions as long as the OL takes a few steps forward.

Go back and watch the Vanderbilt game and you'll understand.  That game exemplified PK's ongoing limitations as a DC during his time leading the defense.

Please explain those limitations .

There were effectively 3 plays that kept the game in question.  And one of those was the offense taking a lower percentage shot on 3rd down on the non-Pi call.  The same play that had a secondary effect of a slightly more difficult FG because no yards were gained.  It virtually eliminated any decision of a potential 4th down try.  And it stopped the clock.  Seeing as how Vandy scored with 33 seconds it certainly changed Vandys philosophy with that extra half minute.  Yes, a TD ends the game but a first down virtually does as well.  So we chose poorly on the risk/reward side of that playcall.

Then the next possession we have 4 plays and punt.

The offense had an opportunity to end and did not.  So let’s keep that in mind given there was a questionable strategic decision.

The other two were the TD pass right before half and the 4th and 19.   I just saw an article saying that was a busted coverage in the first half.  I did not see elaboration on what should have happened though.  Then the 4th and 19.

But what I do know is that we had two backup safeties out for the majority of the game.  I also thought Filsaime got dinged too.  Maybe Manny.  Or maybe another DB as well.  So some confusion given Vandys offense and our experience level was not completely surprising.

What exactly does they weren’t playing together mean?  The long Stowers TD - there wasn’t much apparent the front had anything to do with it.  The other two plays are difficult to determine how they weren’t playing together.

I don’t know the dynamics internally.  No idea who wanted Akina.  Maybe I’ve forgotten but I do not recall ever hearing that a teams front and secondary are not working together.

because PK was actually ass in really big situations. if you remember, we started playing prevent defense against Ohio State in the semifinals right before the half. let them get a convoy out in front of Treyveyon Henderson. 74 yard tuddy. was a dagger. let vandy climb back into a game when we were beating the breaks off of them. happened time and time again.

That TD at half wasn’t prevent it was actually an agressive play call with Gilbeau blitzing and them able to get the screen out to the vacated space from the aggressiveness. That plus horrible angles created that score. Prevent actually SHOULD have been the call in that situation.

What if it’s 59 - 35 Texas?

Kinda comical when Texas scored a total of zero points in the 4q.  One touchdown and no one talks about the defense.  Let’s hope Sark’s offense finally shows up

I just got through watching the entire season on ESPNU, and looking back on the entire season, our defense was by far the best and most consistent part of our team. Sark always liked complementary football, so how much did the turnovers and all the quick punts hurt the defense? Against Vandy and Miss State, Taffe was out, and in the first quarter of the Vandy game, Jalani McDonald dislocated his thumb and was out the rest of the game. We were playing with backups at safety, and Gillbeaux at corner was a liability as well. Those were not the DC's fault. Just bad luck and what he had left to work with.

It’s clear we’re viewing the game differently. I’m looking at in gameplay calling in situations and how the defense is aligned, allowing extended drives because of poor defensive alignment, lack of pressure on the quarterback when you have the opponent backed up on the their goal line for example, those continuous 8 to 12 play drives didn’t need to happen.   How how many 3rd & longs were converted into first downs or fourth and short?   And I haven’t even touched on the poor communication between the front and backend that PK struggled with as a DC.

PK was a good DC, he just wasn’t elite.

Yes, we are definitely looking at things differently.  Our defense was rated nationally much higher in every measurable category than our offense. Those stats don't lie. I'm looking at the entire season as a whole, not individual in-game failures. Yes, the defense had some busts from time to time in coverage and running lanes that were frustrating, but overall those were minimal compared to the offense.

Most would argue that in this age of no targeting and constant PIs with high-powered up-tempo RPO offenses, a solid bend-and-not-break defense like PK's is not a bad thing to have. It keeps your offense in the game, but your offense has to contribute and keep scoring and eating the clock. Sark's didn't do that last year for most of the season. I thought the UM game was the first time the offense truly complemented the defense all year.

I think Sark was looking at a season where they were number one and missed the playoffs. When he analyzed things, he decided some change was necessary. Since he knew he was the offense and wasn't going anywhere, the only change that could be made was defensively. And, having come from Bama with Saban's style of defense on his mind, and having played Kirby and UGA many times and experiencing the aggressive Kirby-ball firsthand, I think he just decided to try something new. He probably reached out to Muschamp and found he was interested, and then it became an easy decision.

I don't think we will see overall a whole lot better defense this year than we saw last year, but I think we will be better as a team because our offense will be a little more consistent in maintaining drives and scoring TDs in the red zone. Sark wants complementary football. I hope the offense does its part and he finally gets it.
