5 guys can’t block 8 no matter how good of of an O line you have. Loaded box- take the passing completions. 
 

There will be many more exotic looks, 7 man blocking schemes, etc next week.

Agree with you about the forced pass for the INT from Arch. Just not a smart play. But apart from that, felt like he did a great job. Run game kind of teetered off through out the game.

Defensively, they gave up some plays but it looked worse than it was. There wasn't much to the D, they just kind of got physical and took it to Texas State. 

Expect Biles to be all over the field next week giving Ohio State O fits.

It was a bad decision, but he threaded the needle to Wingo the play before for what should have been a TD. The sack on the same drive was also a really bad decision in what a great game for him overall. That was like a 20 yard loss in rushing yards, becase he easily had at least 10 yards if he had just ran the ball.

Nick Townsend was a beast blocking.  A few missed assignments or late to an assignment in the secondary allowed for Texas State to move the ball a bit.  Mascoe missed a tackle on sparks early and then gave too much cushion on third down.  Jelani was late with deep help a couple times for Kade Phillips.  Arch still too often overlooks the “correct” decision and instead forces it where it doesn’t need to be. A couple times he got away with it but he needs to tighten up.  Interior lineman struggled as the game went on to open up lanes inside.  Sterling Berkhalter looked great.  Wingo almost had an exceptional day but just had a great one.  If he finds a way to make that catch in the back of the end zone.  Smothers and Brown looked like solid, smart running backs.  Coleman and Wingo blocked their butts off downfield.  Mosely had a quiet day, holding call and dropped ball on a poor pass from Arch.  The middle of the field was wide open for Texas State.

- Texas needs to shore up the interior line run locking.  Assignments in the secondary.  Not over pursuing on the edge and allowing qb rush lane when there is man coverage (Simmons).  Arch needs to more consistently make the right decision rather than the “would that be awesome if this worked” decision.  They need to get set up faster defensively.  They couldn’t get set up a couple times with up tempo and were subject to interior runs.

lots to work on but that QB was pretty dang good and so were a couple of those receivers.

The score was 59-7.

Yeah I recall the sack you're talking about, he hesitated on whether to run or not. The defender gave him the ultimatum. He had another pass, I believe the 2nd TD for Coleman, that he threaded really well.

My two biggest takeaways are that the OL seemed more athletic and better at the point of attack, and the defense was much more aggressive. The OL will only get better as they gel together, and get in “game shape”. Muschamp will be able to get more complex with his game plans as the defense grows, younger guys get more run, and everyone understands their assignments better. 
 

Overall, in a much better place to start the year than last year. Remember that UTEP gave us a hard time. Next week’s message is challenging their physicality to set a tone for the season, and can they overcome one of the big bad wolves in tOSU.

Texas State has a pretty respectable passing game, IMHO.  Good WR, they will give teams fits this season. We were fortunate to give the secondary a workout in the first game.

Combine that with the explosiveness of our offense and our D was out on the field a lot.

This was also the last play the Texas State 1st team offense played in this game. Kinne understood that he has a long season and plenty left to play for and didn't want to take any more chances on injuries that could ruin his season.

Yes, because all our OL should be able to block 3-4 people at the same time. I don't think some people actually watch the games to see what the other team is doing against basic plays.

Yep, it looked a little dirty by #44 in how he rolled him over at about the 11:40 mark of 2nd qtr.  kind me reminded me of when that TCU player gave Jonathan Brooks an extra twist on his leg causing Brook’s injury in 2023

Much better start for Texas.  Got out fast and stayed on the gas.  Great to see the 2s and 3s getting meaningful and significant snaps.  Saves wear and tear on starters.  2ndary appeared to marry much better with fronts.  TXST has a prettty potent offense so kudos to the defense.  Those were the positives for me.  Areas that Texas has to improve.  GCG still not moving interior Dline off of their spots thus a power game when you have to have it is going to be an issue.  There were way to many receivers running open with LBs not getting proper depth and DBs a little laxidasical over the middle.  With TEs being the second most important according to Sark the lack of serioua involvement in the pass game was a little perplexing.   Other areas of note:  Texas WRs werw much more involved in perimeter blocking and opening up opportunities for their teammates behind them.  The difference between a 5 yard and a 20 yard gain.  Opposite Simmons on the DE there should be a lot of opportunities for those guys as he will demand extra attention all season.  Definitely take the W but there are certainly things that need to cleaned up.  Hook Em.

I saw all I needed to see. Arch was sharp. The Oline pass blocking is light years better in game 1. One pre snap penalty by a backup Olineman. The receivers are everything we hoped they would be.  Only based on my watch from the seats of DKR but they have a defense that will give up a few plays but they will make a ton as well. Plenty to clean up but far less than last year at this time.
