If you’re the czar of college football, what are the five things you fix first?

1. Officiating comes with national oversight rather than conference by conference. And it comes with a relegation system for good and bad refs. Replay is also sped up and centralized.

2. Two major leagues or superconferences, like the NFC and AFC.

3. Allow NIL contracts to be multi-year with limitations surrounding transfers/portal and commensurate benefits given to athletes. Stop trying to further regulate NIL. Let the free market determine what that looks like.

4. Expand the playoff to 16 teams. And if teams can have 105 scholarships, lengthen the season by 1-2 games and start play a week earlier in August.

5. Move non-major conferences to spring football. Give those players a better chance to play into a larger school or conference. The NCAA balks at this partially because of the NCAA basketball tourney.

Just some ideas to ponder…

Multi year binding NIL contracts and transfer limitations would help a lot. The free market would most likely adapt if there were more certainty.

Players would get paid but if you miss on your evaluations you are going to pay a price. Just like the NFL drafting the wrong player too high.

I wouldn’t want to extend the season. The 12 games is already a grind and tough physically on those young men. I think you would get schools adding more cupcakes.

Do away with automatic top 4 seeding for P4 conf champs.  Automatic qualifiers into the playoffs yes, but Miami and BYU getting byes and seeded 3/4 is not right, especially if BYU drops a game along the way.  An argument can be made Boise St is just as good or better, but they’re seeded 12th

Eliminate the playoff. Go to the AP #1 vs #2 playing in the Rose Bowl every year.

1.  NIL is open and free market, Collectives can have terms in contract.  Player transfer penalties, non competes, etc

2.  Officiating has national oversight.  grades made public on crews.    There has to be some gambling issues with the horrnedus calls the last several years.  

3.  All aggie fans required to see someone on their mental health issues

4.  Big 12 and ACC only play in 11am slot on Saturdays, Friday nights, and TH nights

5.  No automatic bids for conference champs.

6.  No Bowl games at all.  Team 17-32 have a NIT type tourney.

7.  Regulate second hand ticket market, paying $150 fees per ticket is BS.

Make the coaches that want to cry to the refs about every call use a timeout when they want to question a call,  otherwise leave the refs alone.  

No penalties for end zone celebrations or taunting.  If you keep the penalty make it loss of td. and yardage from start of play.  

Have the computers pick playoff teams. The committee meets once a year and sets the data that goes in and the computers pick the teams and seeding based on that.  Personally I would heavily weight pre-conference SOS.

Strictly enforce sideline rules for coaches,  no warning just 15 yard penalty if rule is violated. 

Multi year Nil contracts that have portal limitations.

Make this one certain rule inviolable: in order to participate, all college athletes must be students in good standing making reasonable progress toward a degree - in the immortal words of Ross Perot, NO PASS NO PLAY.

This simple baseline has more often been ignored by basketball powers than by P4 football teams, if news stories are evidence. 

I don/t believe UNC - CH has ever taken a hit for any of Roy Williams' teams of non-student athletes.

Athletes should be allowed to sign NIL contracts before signing or at signing with a school. Need to eliminate the he said she said verbal agreements.

G5 farm teams! 
 

I’ve had this idea ever since the portal first opened that Texas should somehow try to get something like that done. UTSA and/or Utep. Funnel project takes that have the measurables, and specific skill sets to those teams. Most likely they start right away. Helps the G5 teams compete and if they reach potential and we have a hole bring them up. Also an agreement to pay the team for the spring game maybe even a couple joint practices, to get eyes on some of your prospects and build relationships. Obviously those prospects aren’t forced to go Texas if they decide to transfer but I bet the hit rate would be good with NIL.

2. 6 year eligibility for all players but also capped at 6 years no exceptions 

3. 16 team playoff but the 4 top conference champions continue to have a first round bye

5. 105 scholarships which scholarships could be used partially as in baseball with a cap of 115 players in the program 

6. teams are allowed to travel with 85 players

I like the idea of 4 super conferences split up by geographic locations.  NE SE NW SW.  Those can be split e/w or n/s.  Top teams from either side play each other to decide championship for that conference.   Champions from that are seeded and play each other in a 1 and done format to decide the natty.

No kickoffs in the middle of the day if you are playing in August.  We can’t endanger these kids any more than we do…we have to make the game safer, not more dangerous

Real penalties for paying players in cash, as these schools subject the kids to felonies for tax evasion.   Files are constructed and turned over to the IRS and the Feds

A statutory change to Title IX.  The reality is that young men need scholarships more than women do, particularly black men.  Women are more mature and outperform men in high school.  We have to get our young men into college however we can.  The do gooders are missing the problem.  

Grading of all refs by a regulatory body.   Grades get published.  The worst refs get downgraded, paid less, whatever.  We don’t need some of these stupid ass calls affecting games.   Statistically-impossible (i.e, anything beyond 2 standard deviations) outcomes need to be examined.  The holding penalties against us last year is one example.   Oklahoma State is an example.  

the SEC and the Big 10 should pay their refs more, and they should fire people who suck.   Socialism breeds mediocrity.

Serious proposals:

Football conferences are separated from conference alignment in other sports.  Having non-revenue sports fly thousands of miles for conference match-ups is f'ing stupid.

Conferences are limited to no more than 10 teams and are required to play round robin format.

Offensive players remove their heads before taking the field to eliminate risk of targeting calls, I mean injuries.

To be fair, I don’t think the calls in question yesterday were made individually by Mar.

It’s been his crew, not him personally, who has had repeated issues.

While I agree with what you’re saying (it’s the crew, not necessarily Mar personally), the pattern I’ve always noticed with Mar’s crew is they throw way too many flags early in the game (which irritates all parties very early in the game), and therefore the bad vibes get more pronounced as the game goes on.  Then, the boiling point is achieved. 
 
Last night, BYU’s Sitaki through a career-best tantrum at Mar for the way the first half ended.  But, by games end, the Utah AD was publicly questioning his school’s membership in the Big 12.  Let that sink in.

And all of it lands at the feet officiating crew leader - Kevin Mar.  Yet again.

At some point, you have to question whether Mar & crew bring a uniquely incompetent approach to officiating a football game, or it’s something more nefarious (a crew following the wishes of their conference leadership)?  Either way, it can’t be a recurring coincidence that it’s always the same crew.  Every.Single.Time.

Assuming it’s not the more nefarious cause, Yormark has to seriously consider not allowing Mar and crew to call another game for the Big 12.  It’s gotten to the tipping point of compromising the integrity of the game, and that is a line the Big 12 can’t afford to cross (lest their TV partners abandon them).  Mar & crew have single-handily inflicted incalculable brand damage to Big 12 football.  Again.
