Deep in the heart Posted 19 hours ago Posted 19 hours ago @Jeff Howe Thank you for your passion on this topic. I would have a post full of asterisks if I said how I feel about these butt hurt fans and coaches. It's a new era of recruiting so EVERY school is doing this. Just because you got beat out for a recruit in your backyard doesn't mean he it's just because of money. He's been in Austin for a month training and had the opportunity to see the city. Athens and Austin are not on the same level when it comes to a kid with an entrepreneurial spirit. The crying is getting old and it's something I would expect from fans, not site moderators and coaches. Hell, we got beat out because of NIL but I don't see Sark making a spectacle about it. Sorry, rant over. 13 1 Quote

All Gas No Brakes Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago I agree 100%! Jeff’s soliloquy on this topic got my loins girded! Does anyone have a link to the Dawg Nation rant that started this discussion? 3 Quote
Bobby Burton Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago When Notre Dame and Oregon come into the state of Texas and take two legacies like Kaydon Finley and Jalen Lott with and because of larger NIL offers, excuse me if I tell Kirby Smart and Georgia welcome to recruiting in 2025. 35 1 Quote

NothinButDaHorns34 Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago I broke it down like this to a buddy of mine who’s a fan of opposing team. Texas was a sleeping giant getting rocks thrown at them for close to 15 years, Now the giants awake, NIL is legal, Texas is a very profitable brand, So now the excuses and “he only went there because they paid him” has started. Don’t hate the player, Hate the game. 4 Quote

GoHorns1 Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago Everyone including Texas have been dropping “bags” for a long time. Had buddies of mine get “handshakes” in the 70s. 2 Quote
horns96 Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago (edited) Also big props to @Jeff Howe for pointing out that all fanbases engage in such thinking - when we get a commit, it's because of the program and the relationships, when "they" get the commit it's the bags. Many of us did it (myself included) when Ojo committed to Tech. It's just human nature, but not used to seeing such intellectual honesty in a discussion of SEC football 🤘😉 Edit: To be clear, we're fortunate that we have mods that don't go beyond matter-of-fact statements about larger NIL deals during these discussions and not equating players taking those deals to moral failures. Deep in the heart Posted 16 hours ago Author Posted 16 hours ago It's just classless to me for a coach of Kirby's status to get involved in the BS. He's won championships and has the number 2 class. They spend money. I'm tired of the hypocrisy that's going on. 3 2 Quote

I know about the handshakes and money sandwiches but those are still very different than full out bags that were famously being dropped by SEC teams well before it became somewhat legal. 2 Quote
Hookem72 Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago I think the problem is most fans tend to believe that everything about their program is simply superior to every other program, so if a recruit doesn’t pick them it is because of money. This is a shallow way to think. Georgia is butt hurt because they are losing culture recruits to a superior culture system and want to blame it on money. You may recall a few weeks ago many members of this board were doing the same thing. I heard a pod cast on dawg nation where they were ridiculing Tyler Atkinson’s brand AtkinUp and saying he wasn’t even that good. It was silly. I wouldn’t put much stock in what Georgia fans and even Kirby are trying to imply. They have a great program and so do we. We will win some and they will too. We just have to whip their ass this year on the field to shut them up. I’m here for that! hookem 🤘 4 Quote

Nope it’s all because of Smoke. Everything changed after Smoke. 1 Quote

No one complained when they could come into Texas and poach whatever they wanted. Now that we do the same, it's the worst thing ever lol. 2 Quote
harveycmd Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago (edited) Kirby needs to establish some relationships with the Athens PD. Lived there for a while when I was seventeen and eighteen without ever getting a single ticket. Edited 10 hours ago by harveycmd 2 Quote

No doubt but there was an order of magnitude difference between the typical handshakes and the bag drops SEC schools were doing pre-NIL. And now there is another order of magnitude difference between those bag drops and the "NIL" today. For players in the UT roster they are probably literally making 100x what they were before NIL... (Talking in terms of pure cash, not counting the value of the scholarships and whatnot). 1 Quote

I’m here for that! hookem 🤘 The difference between other programs and Texas, though, is that Texas is objectively/measurable better in quite a few ways. One of them, for instance: Austin is the largest American city with a flagship state university and no “big 3” pro sports teams. That is objectively important in the NIL age. Also, we are the only team that has been to both of the last two final fours. Also, the team with the most combined draft picks in the last two drafts. On the point about Dawg Nation trashing Atkinson: just another reason to be appreciative of the class of OTF. 3 Quote

Well said, Bobby! Personally, I can’t stand Kirby Smart. Plus, someone needs to tell him to find another barber. That bowl cut haircut isn’t cutting it. Lol. Quote

They fear the Texas brand…most importantly, Texas coming into their respective states and doing very well recruiting elite talent in their backyard like Georgia two years in a row as an example. The sleeping giant is now awake, and coaches like Kirby are now realizing the result. 🤘 1 Quote
