At this point the coaches have to be parallel pathing a plan in case this is just not an in-season fix with Arch.

IMO you keep working with him through this weekend but at some point the team and the season goals are the priority.

So what’s the contingency if he lays another egg this weekend or in Gainesville?

Mine would be to work KJ into the gameplan starting this weekend. Give him a few series in the 2nd and the 4th. See how he does under the lights. Then spend the entire two weeks prior to Florida giving them something extra to game plan for, and maybe continue to use Lacey as a change of pace to come in for Arch.

If the wheels do eventually fall off for Arch this season, at least we’re getting some critical experience for KJ.

Thoughts?

I’d take a page from Nick Saban from a few years ago. Split the quarters of Manning and Caldwell at this point. Give manning a very short leash and if he’s the same then pull him and split the quarters with Caldwell and Lacey. SHSU is really bad, there is absolutely zero reason for anyone to struggle vs  them

I just don't see what Caldwell gets us that we can't get from Lacey. Unless we really think Caldwell is capable of an SECCG / CFP run, if Arch is out you're basically building for 2026.

I’m not sure what you do.  Caldwell at least has started 5 college games and has over 400 passing attempts.  Presumably he has some talent or he wouldn’t be QB2 now.

I have no idea what Lacey (or Owens) really bring to the table.  My tendency is to go with the more experienced guy but would ultimately have to defer to the coaches, which is somewhat scary considering the current situation.

Let Arch cook

For a certain amount of time, yes. But there’s too much invested in the success of this program from an NIL standpoint, fan investment and the considerations of every other player on the team for this entire season to turn into 12 games of teaching Arch how to play again. At some point you rip the bandaid which brings in the contingency planning.

If they think KJ is 100% the guy post Arch, then keep him warm and ready to go now.

im curious what would happen if things just totally came off the rails to the point where Arch just couldn’t take the heat from the fans and media and he transferred to somewhere like Tulane in the offseason.

would they be looking to roll with KJ or get someone high end out of the portal that could lead to KJ and other transferring.

Repeat this after me….Arch Manning will not get benched. No chance.

You better pray he figures it out. That is the contingency plan.

Everyone has a plan until they start out 0-2 in SEC play and 3-3 on the season.

I’m willing to bet my house that no QB other than Arch Manning will see non-garbage time minutes this Saturday. Nor should they.

The solution that Nick Saban did in 2023 is not applicable to the Arch situation. Arch is having a mental/confidence issue. The solution to a mental/confidence issue is not to bench your QB. Jalen Milroe’s issue in 2023 was not the same. It wasn’t even really an issue for Milroe- we were just really good with a good defense.

SHSU is not the same as SJSU or UTEP. SJSU and UTEP were nobodies, but with a pulse. You don’t lead the nation in negative plays and sacks like UTEP unless you have at least a slight pulse/capacity to be disruptive. I don’t think SHSU even has the capacity to be disruptive.

This will be the closest to “running on air” that the offense has got. Which is exactly what I think they need. At this point, they need a true layup game with long TDs, etc, backups in by the 3rd Q. I think we can get that and I think it’s critical.

If we can get that, I think that plus the bye week will give them what they need vs Florida. Then a win vs Florida, even if it’s close, will give them what they need to take on OU.

You ride Arch out and hope to see him return to last year's level of play and continue to improve and progress. Only three games in and people want him out. It couldn't get any worse than this past weekend unless your name is DJ Lagway.

Contingency plan is change the offense to a running scheme with options and depend on kicking and special teams to grind out close games.
