A line about 15 deep has started outside of DKR where students are vying for the best seat possible in the Texas student section ahead of tomorrow’s kickoff vs. Ohio State.

Since when is the student section first come first serve? Seems like a disaster

It is complicated, but they have to get their tickets in advance through essentially a lottery process, but once they get their ticket, seating is basically general admission.

A lot of issues with student section.

The same groups will camp outside overnight, only for it to be a mad dash into the stadium when the gates open, to get the front row seats - specifically where the cameras film.

Frats also have their pledges run in early as well, and they try to lay claim to an entire row (or multiple rows).

The student section is also too small to accomodate the number of students who would like to attend, so about half of the Big Ticket holding students don't get the chance to go to games.

Many more issues as well...

That’s exactly what I would think happens. Back when I was a student we had LASP (longhorn all season pass) where it would be a draw system in advance for a reserved seat

Part of the student section thing was a change made by CDC with the intention of making sure the student section was all in on the game. The people who stand in line are more likely to be in DKR rowdy for 4 quarters. It started shortly after I graduated, but we used to have a huge problem of students getting in and leaving drunk and hungry at halftime.

you’re never going to have a perfect formula with the student section, but this at least ensures DKR is a fearsome place to play 🤘

"...this at least ensures DKR is a fearsome place to play".  Absolutely!  You want your dedicated fanatics as close to the field as possible.  You don't want a bunch of casual observers leisurely filtering into their seats during the first two quarters.  Since this policy was implemented, the student section has been rabid and can hold their own with any other student body.  Hoping they will be off-scale fanatical freaks tomorrow!  It'll definitely help the team and should make a great impression on the large number of recruits that will be in attendance.  Hook 'em!

They moved from assigned reserved to GA during the late Perrin / early CDC years. This was done when we were quite bad at football (I was a student!) and demand was…muted. Now there is significant “over subscription” relative to availability which drives this line. Think we have <20k student tickets available. Believe there are other rules in place as well which drive qualification for football tickets but someone younger than me can opine. The good news is our students heavily support the team these days!
