OTF Premium Would you take this regular-season outcome for the Longhorns right now?

This question was posed to Rod, CJ and me on the livestream last night: If you were told Texas was guaranteed to split the following four games (at Ohio State, at Florida, at Georgia and vs. Texas A&M), would you take it right now?

I'm assuming in this scenario that the Longhorns win the other eight games on the schedule. That means Texas is guaranteed to end the regular season with a 10-2 record.

On one hand, a loss to Ohio State and one conference loss means Texas is likely headed to the SEC title game, probably as the No. 1 seed for the second year in a row. On the other hand, two conference losses, including one to the Aggies in the regular-season finale at home, mean the Longhorns would probably be sweating it out to see if they're in the 12-team CFP.

Due to what a loss to Texas A&M would mean, I wouldn't take it. With that said, I've seen more than a few 9-3 predictions on the board, so I'm assuming there are members of the community who would sign up for 10 wins, regardless of which two games are the losses.

So, would you take it?

Can’t lose Jawja since they’ll very likely be off the schedule the next few years.  0-3 in living rooms is not ideal in recruiting.

Losing to ou and aggy never feels good even with a NC.

Ohio State… don’t want to lose to those cocky ass Yankees.

I’ll take a trap game loss against Kentucky or something like that.

FYI, we haven’t lost on the road when I’m in the house in a while (not counting neutral sites).  And, I’m going to Ohio State, Florida and Kentucky.  So there’s that.

I expect to win the NC.  I’m pretty sure the players do too.

I can't concede anything with this team. I don't think Julian Sayin, Gunnar Stockton, young Lagway or Marcel Reed should beat Texas with this defense and Arch Manning at the helm.

I think accepting a guaranteed two loss regular season is lowering internal expectations as I think this years Texas team is further along in development towards a National Title than any of these teams. Don't let any of them off the hook and keep the foot on the gas!

No, I’d rather see Texas win all four of those games and have a WTF loss against Kentucky, Mississippi State, or Vanderbilt similar to how Notre Dame lost to Northern Illinois but still went on to play for a national championship.

I would but hoping we reach our ceiling.  To be honest I look at next year as the year we should take it all but I am hopeful Arch and our O line can get it going on a dime and not go through the normal hiccups of a first year starter.  Time will tell.

In this scenario, it would be best to lose at OSU and Florida. That would mean Texas would build toward wins against OU, Georgia, and A&M. The narrative would instantly shift about Texas if it beats Georgia, and it would also mean that Texas would be undefeated since Week 5. It would have a strong case for both the SEC championship and would be an extremely hot team going. Into the playoffs.

A 10-2 Texas with a win at Ohio State and at one of Florida/Georgia is in the playoff 100% of the time.

So yes, I’ll take a guaranteed playoff spot if offered that today.

Like it? No.

Take it if still means CFP and especially with a championship at the end? Every time, yes!

Take it and fall short? That depends on the momentum Arch carries into '26.... 10-2 despite key injuries and losing by a fg in the nat'l championship with bad referree calls > 12-0 followed by a SEC title game turd vs say, Bama or LSU, and then an early cfp exit. 

 

P.s. I'd rank the desire to win these games like this: Georgia, A&M, OSU, OU, Florida. Losing to Florida and OU would be the best 10-2 scenario but BOYYYYY would we all be in a meltdown headed to Lexington.

I know we have PTSD based on the last decade+, but … The bar for the team, expressed by Sark himself, is competing for a Natty every year.   Hedging/accepting a couple losses, with the current talent base, is contradictory.  This is the new reality … and I love it.    Go for the highest expectations every year and see how the chips fall.  Be disappointed with 2 losses.  All gas no breaks

P.s.s. I'd like to bubble wrap some guys Oct 15-Nov 1.  Basically, the SEC title game is the ONLY game we can shrug off after that.
