What’s a potential third string linebacker worth? Or would be second string?

I don’t know. But Barnes appears to be willing to test those waters.

This. Odd that he'd leave. Can't be a huge market out there for him.

I'd have to imagine a lot of these guys seeking way more money then they are worth will start to have their asking prices come down over time. The big name people who can demand whatever are setting the market, and the depth pieces will then fall in line behind. for every bo barnes that we have, there is a bo barnes from another team who will realize he wont get that money and sign for what we think is reasonable over time.

He had four tackles in 2025.

He is a good player with the potential to eventually be a starter.

Lots of players take less after their freshman season.

It’s a renegotiation year to year.

Last year we had concerns about only taking 1 LB in the 2025 class. You said we're fine because Bo Barnes is the future.

We can't keep borrowing from our future by taking portal guys in all of perpetuity.

At this rate I don't want to hear about how we can't complain about the portal success because we had the #1 class.

I can’t imagine that anyone outside of Tech is happy with the current situation. This portal window will surely fire up most of the P4 schools to demand change

yeah especially if the Demond williams situation ends up with him freely being allowed to leave. If you cant enforce a contract the player willingly signed, then man this is going to get ugly real fast

IMO the move would be to take 10 stud freshmen who are likely to play year 1/2 and 10 cheaper dev guys (Jett type) and then supplement with 20 from the portal each year. Still need a core of recruits, but those need to be guys ready to play year 1 or 2 or cheap enough to be the depth. Then if their asks go up and wont see PT, let em walk and replace em.

This is pretty much what Oregon does rn I believe

Totally sucks, and I hate this new world, but until we even get enforcable contracts (let alone collective bargaining), you have to tighten up the core

100% agree

2-3

With the third a cheaper depth piece than Barnes.

What the point of cheaper depth when you swing miss at all your top targets? Seems like there should be more to go around for depth. I reiterate we are going 0 for 6 for our top 6. Monday you told me no. Brown, Baugh, woods, Michigan guys, Coleman.

I saw that OU just added one of the Michigan Linebackers, and as usual, ESPN says he's one of the top Linebackers in the portal. We just saw him play, and either didn't get a visit or didn't ask for one.

It seems to me that the portal is a crapshoot, and there are not a lot of players that Sark and Company are not willing to bet a lot on. I would think the best read would be on their own players. These kids we are letting walk were not overly great, but on the outside looking in, they had potential. I suppose, on the inside, they look at things differently. Their jobs are on the line, so I trust their judgment a lot more than the internet coaches.

Playing a LB with 4 tackles over experience and production is a joke

Show me the experience and production.  And if we get some,  what about when the that guy leaves?  Robbing Peter to pay Paul.  Can’t keep letting your best young talent walk.

In this day and age it probably just makes sense to log off and look at the roster in August to cheer on the Texas team without much emotional attachment to the “labor”

my new plan. cant get too caught up in the weeds

Listed at 6-1 244 true freshman Bo Barnes with 4 years of eligibility.

6A 1st Team All-State LB (highly productive and disruptive senior yr).

Ran a sub 11 100M

I really don't like losing this physically gifted, young player knowing we still need to pay to add another portal LB.

Doubt this can be salvaged but I hope we has a change of heart or we find a compromise and Bo stays like D Williams.

Why get a top recruiting class from high school...In this era horns need to sign 70 % portal and get underrated high school 3 stars that won't bolt after one year . Yo. WTH is Brandon Harris doing . We need an experienced nfl man to run this show . Right now this is a shitzshow

What triggered the testing of these waters? Is this a pay reduction situation and he is looking to see what his worth is out on the market? Or is this a demand for more? The details are missing from this...

Texas is evaluating the value on a year to year basis of these players.

What percentage of players enter the portal because their agents advise them to, compared to those who choose to enter on their own?
