I might be done as a Mavs fan

"I believe that defense wins championships," Mavs general manager Nico Harrison told ESPN, explaining his motivation to deal Doncic for Davis. "I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We're built to win now and in the future."

Lakers superstar LeBron James learned of the trade when it broke while he was out to dinner with his family after Saturday's win against the New York Knicks, sources close to James told ESPN. James was surprised by the news, is processing it and had no idea it was in the works, sources said.

The Mavericks were motivated to move Doncic due to his constant conditioning concerns, sources told ESPN. There had been significant frustration within the organization about Doncic's lack of discipline regarding his diet and conditioning, which team sources considered a major factor in his injury issues.

What a slap in the face for Luka, but I don't blame the Mavs.

If Luka won't work out to stay in shape and you are forced to give him a long term max contract your team is screwed.

Your leader sets the tone.  Barkley won zero titles for the same reason.  Lazy stars kill franchises.

Look... Luka is a great player, but I understand why. Luka never committed to defense or his body. If I'm going to be on the hook for half a billion dollars for a guy, he better come in shape and ready to work. We've already seen Luka have back problems and now, his calf. KD and Kobe, I remember vividly, had calf issues and then boom, they blew their Achilles.  Those guys were way more committed. I hate it.. but I know Jason Kidd wants a team that will compete on the defensive end and even Klay gives more effort on that end than Luka does, even at this stage. We have watched this Mavs team compete well without him, and I think ownership and the GM, along with Kidd saw that, as well, at the same time. Biggest trade in NBA history, no question.

I agree if Luka woulda signed the super max deal it would have been a disaster for the Mav's, by the end of the contract he would look like Russell Crowe. Not the Gladiator Russell Crowe, but the Thor Love and Thunder 300 lb, Russell Crowe. The guy has no respect for his body so in saying that has no respect for his teammates or organization. It's a sad deal.

I'm reading some interesting comments about this and apparently the new owner is a big casino guy in Vegas? Some suggest that he may be looking to take the team out of Dallas and relocate them to Las Vegas? That would be a wild move. So get rid of your best player, get people disinterested and then announce the team is moving for "insert reason".

No idea, just what I'm sussing out. Don't really follow anyone in the NBA close enough, let alone the Mav's but this is just a wildly stupid move on their part. He's what? 25 or so, right? Guy almost averages a triple double every year and you trade him.

Never, never trade the young face of the organization and a future top 25 best ever player who just took you to the finals for an old center…and then say you made the trade because “defense wins championships” as your justification .  No, you build around that piece.

Cuban would have never let this happen

I am curious about this part of the story, because Mark Cuban supposedly retained control of basketball operations with his remaining minority interest.  It seems to the entire viewing world, including me, that Luka was worth more than what Dallas received in return, and none of us think Cuban would have agreed to a grossly unfavorable deal.

If this trade lights a fire under Luka and he maximizes his potential, this could be the basketball equivalent of the Red Sox trading Babe Ruth to the Yankees.

Has to be something that really concerned the Mavs about Luka. Otherwise, it may be the dumbest trade in NBA history.
