Adam Lane Posted June 7 Posted June 7 I've seen him twice in the past week and he has imploded both times. Season story. 1 Quote

khorn5 Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Seems to be great for a batter. Then he starts to feel himself a bit after a K and loses it. It’s like clockwork lately. Quit messing with the off speed. He’s in to throw 97. Just throw 97! Quote
harveycmd Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Burns isn't calling his own pitches. Weiner calls the pitches. In the postgame, Schloss said the fourth ball on the first walk was called to be off the plate because the batter liked to chase. He didn't chase and the walk resulted. The second walk was on Burns. Schloss said it's on him to put Burns in better spots. That's him covering for his player, but it's true too. Knowing that Burns is a little wild under pressure, you must account for that. But you have to think about who else would you put in and who are you saving for another day. 2 Quote
bevocbs Posted June 7 Posted June 7 He is definitely up and down. But situations really matter. He is much better when he comes in for a clean inning. It seems like when he comes in for high level situations like last night, he gets too amped up and overthrows, causing the control issues. That is why he didn't make it (and probably never will) in the closer role. But he had a couple of good outings recently, and I still think he can help us in the final push. I actually feel like if they had put him in to start the 6th, instead of trying to extend DV another inning, he probably would have been fine for an inning or two. But I also understand why they would want to ride DV as long as they could. 6 Quote
tsip92 Posted June 7 Posted June 7 I understand the sentiment but I’m not a fan of starting threads specifically to sh*t on our own players. 19 1 Quote

They felt Smith was in swing mode and the cutter didn’t bite enough to convince him to take a hack. Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread, but Burns seems better when coming in for a clean inning or with less traffic on the bases. 1 Quote
Burnt Orange Horn Posted June 7 Posted June 7 No pitcher is any good unless he can throw strikes. Bottom line. Quote
dentonhorn Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Other teams pitchers can be awful, ours just need some work. 1 Quote

You have to be a special type of athlete to throw 97 in the zone with a repeatable delivery. Quote

He’s in to throw it by them with bases loaded under 2 outs. They’ve worked with him the entire year. He’s only needed for 2/3 outs. I think the staff knows it’s in him. If he has to dial it back to 94 fine, but his game isn’t bending spin. I’d like to see him succeed here, not a lot of 96/99 arms floating around. Quote
TCope111 Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Burns has been up and down all year. We need him and that means taking the good with the bad. He didn’t cost us a win last night and can still help us win another game or 2 this year. 3 Quote
Here for the Wins Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Watching Georgia extend their starter then struggle from the pen and MSU using a starter to hang on are pretty solid indicators of how other programs feel about their bullpens. I am not even sure what Oregon was doing - two low use relievers then a guy that had started. Quote
LonghornFan4Ever Posted June 8 Posted June 8 Hat tip to Burns for bouncing back last night. Maybe someone showed him or the coaching staff this thread and made some adjustments… 6 Quote

On my son’s 15U showcase team, my son throws 64% strikes but tops out at 77mph; the kid who throws 84mph is less than 50%. If that kid could increase his strike throwing, he’d be a no. 1. Threepacballer Posted June 8 Posted June 8 Burns is Not Awful!!!! (Maybe a little inconsistent). Quote
f1revo Posted June 8 Posted June 8 (edited) His delivery is bonkers. There's no way he will ever be consistent with that. Hopefully something he can alter with coaching. Edited June 8 by f1revo Quote

TexasMDcoach Posted June 8 Posted June 8 Definitely routing for him and I believe he has it in him. Pitching is such a mental game. He has the talent to dominate once he fine tuns the mental aspects. We see flashes of it. Quote
