There is a group set to mete out punishment that has the authority to do so. When or if that will actually happen, I can’t say.

No, they could not. Year two would have gone against any cap.

You couldn’t legally do that. You can’t have a signed agreement with a recruit until signing day. So nothing could be submitted to NILGo/Deloitte.

Paying players from a collective while they are a recruit is clearly illegal. Apparently some schools and/or their collectives think those rules don’t apply to them.

It's not gonna. Doesn't mean they won't lose recruits they promised money they can't deliver. Let me know when those schools will win a natty before Texas.

When it was the Wild, Wild, West of recruiting, Texas struggled because it won’t work in the gray area. When everything was legal, Texas came back to the top. It needs to do what it needs to in order to stay there.

We have a stacked roster, and I think Texas playing the long game is the right move here.  The teams that are overloading and breaking the rules are going to swallow a bitter pill in the next couple of years with penalties and player retention nightmares.

Couple things seem clear:

1) Texas Tech has a big “Kick Me” sign on their back as every Big12 head coach expresses some mix of envy and anger towards Lubbock for their stupid money and illegal promises being thrown around.   Joey McGuire and the Raiders are gonna get everybody’s best each Saturday.   If Tech’s goal was to shine a big bright light on themselves, mission accomplished. 

2) It’s gonna take a while, maybe 6 months, maybe a year, maybe longer, for things to settle down with improved clarity and enforcement from the new Sports Commission to start guiding schools and enforcing compliance.   Until then, Wild Wild West continues.   

3) All the ‘tricks’ used this spring in front loading contracts, paying HS players monthly $$, promising NIL, etc, it’s all short-term.   Eventually in the next 1-2 yrs, these overpaid players will be offered much less the next year to stay and then it gets interesting to watch the transfer portal once they’ve drained all the could from their tier 2 school like Tech.

4) Staying with point #3…..Feels like Tech is playing a more brash version of the same game that A&M played in 2022 when they bought their way to the #1 recruiting class.    It became clear very quickly you can’t buy culture, the wins didn’t show up on the field in College Station, locker room divided and over half that vaunted #1 class (majority of the top rated players) transferred out.   Will be interesting (and fun) to watch unfold and see how it plays out.  For A&M, they were so tired of spending and losing that they swallowed $76mllion to part ways with Jimbo and start over.   Joey McGuire buyout is nothing in comparison if he doesn’t win big this season. 

5) Long-term, Texas gonna be fine.   Discipline wins in long run.   Strategic Expanded Legitimate NIL (to augment rev sharing) for all our key players on both sides of the ball who are proving it on the field will be key over time.  

6) Many teams are gonna find their way to sign 5-stars and load up with unproven talent.   With all the money talk and financial promises to these 18-20 yr olds, team culture, discipline, work ethic, player development, elite coaching, now more than ever, will be what separates the elite teams from all others.

We’ve been great the last couple of recruiting classes and the roster is solid, but that only last so long.  We’re Texas…….we’re not going to stretch the rules…….while everyone else stretches the rules. We’re in the SEC…….we better do like the rest are doing or be wondering what happened.

I don't know why so many of you Texas fans are so excited and looking forward to getting away from the wild west and all these rules and regulations that may or may not happen/come. Texas has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the wild west of NIL because of our resources. It's crazy how y'all don't see this and how the new landscape hurts Texas more than helps.

I suspect there will be a ton of movement this fall when recruits see their contracts in writing.

The problem with that approach is not 2026, but rather later down the line. What happens when what’s on campus is in the NFL? Need to keep stacking classes irrespective of what’s on the roster.

Bobby, I believe the Big 12 commissioner probably knows a few Big 12 teams are recruiting in  illegal ways. But, he isn't going to do anything because he wants the Big 12 to be like the Sec & Big 10 and get more teams in the playoff. Your thoughts on my view would be appreciated.

You called it last year when this looked like it was heading this way........a complete mess!  This is certainly NOT over.  Undoubtedly, many more lawsuits to come.  After all the false promises come to light, the players (the Ojos of the world) will be screaming murder.  

Absolutely speaks to a right way and a wrong way to conduct business.  Glad Texas/CDC/Sark are on the right side of this......at least it appears that way from what you have shared.

Agree. Texas did well under the "Wild West," and unlikely to do as well under regulations because UT will be in the front row of "Boy Scout Universities."
